Nancy asks…
Need a Direct Mail Service to Print and Send Postcards?
I’ve got a large project for the credit union that I work at and I am struggling to find a direct mail service that can print and send my postcards to the customers. Any ideas?

Betty asks…
What makes you respond to direct mail pieces?
We’ve all received oversized postcards in the mail advertising something. If you’ve ever responded to one of these things, what made you do it?
Postcard Mkt Mgr answers:
I ask myself whether I need “this” or just want “this.” If needed, is it durable or frivolous. If durable, is the price where it should be or not based on my funds. There are other considerations, though not high on the list (color, S&H, environmentally responsible, more). If low priced, I can make the decision alone (let’s say $100.00 or less) though will seek spousal (could be parental for others) input. In general, we don’t submit it to a committee of peers to uncover their experiences or thoughts as Direct Mail is personal mail.

Richard asks…
I am thinking about doing a direct mail for a photography business that specializes in architectural and ?
corporate photography. I plan on using a service and mailing out 5,000 6×9 postcards to just business in the boston area. I am spending about 1,400.00 for this mailing. Last year I did a smaller mailing in my local area of only 500 and a smaller card. I had little results. Can I expect better results with my new plan and what other aspects should I consider?
Postcard Mkt Mgr answers:
May I suggest you join the PPA (Professional Photographers of America)? They have a wealth of information like this to help photographers in their business. Marketing is one major area and they cover it very well. You will find information on how to make your cards more effective, so I suggest that you take less than $400 of the $1,400 and join them. You will make your money back in short order. Their site is www.ppa.com. You have to be a member to get to the members only area that contains these aids, but you can surf the other areas of the site before becoming a member. You’ll find some assistance in the other areas, but the members only area focuses and goes in depth on the issues of photography as a business.

I recently did a direct mail for a photography business. I mailed 500 postcards to people that had over 80k for yearly income. I was curious what I should consider a decent respose for 500 mailed and how long I should wait before I consider a new marketing program or additional mailings?
Postcard Mkt Mgr answers:
1% is good and a 3% response is awesome.

Betty asks…
What is the least expensive method for direct mail advertisements with postcards?
I have 5,000 postcards I’d like send to my local town where my business is located. My question is what is the cheapest way for me to have these mailed out? I would need to obtain a mailing list for my town and the service required would be to have each card addressed individually and postage paid. Thank you!
Postcard Mkt Mgr answers:
Mailer’s Haven offers a great price on lists.

I would first purchase a list so you get your message out to the right “target” people. I would then start by only sending out small batches at a time as to prevent getting potentially overwhelmed from the responses. This would also work best to keep your campaign targeted to certain zip codes or locations so you can better track your demographics. Ot to mention it would also be less expensive.
Those would be my first suggestions if you wanted a do-it-yourself, grassroots approach. Otherwise, I would say contact a direct mail company to have them handle the whole thing professionally. It is sometimes worth the money.
Good luck!

Your Questions About Postcard Advertising

Mary asks…

Linda asks…
Good idea for Seniors Advertising Postcard?
I work at a small newspaper and we often do supplement issues with specific themes, Seniors being one of them. We make up postcards to send to advertisers to get them to buy ad space. Every single time we end up resorting to using a stock photo of an older couple with type over it. Anybody have a fresh new idea of what we could put on the front of the card to entice people to advertise with us?
Postcard Mkt Mgr answers:
Your customers are not seniors they are the advertisers that are looking to target seniors. Why not use a postcard that states more with text and facts on how your newspaper is doing a senior showcase and get your message in front of 10,000 seniors in the metro area etc. I don’t know your specific senior readership of your newspaper but i would position it like that. I work for a newspaper as well and that is something that is overlooked at times. Right now your customer is the prospective advertisers so they may not look at the senior picture and get interested as opposed to statistics of targeting that demographic. Hope that helps

Direct Mail Marketing
While there are millions who prefer online marketing campaigns and methods, there are still individuals who prefer direct mail marketing campaigns even better. Some might think that a direct mail marketing campaign is an easy thing to do, but it is not. It takes a lot of time, energy and mostly relies on refining techniques used from time to time. This can be very costly if you are a beginner and are unaware of how it?s done. However there are steps and measures one could take in order to make their direct mail marketing campaign a success. The response rate will also be higher if you execute some of the following methods.
After spending thousands of dollars on your latest direct mail marketing campaign, would you like it if a potential customer throws the mail away even without a second glance? Your answer would obviously be a big no. To avoid this from happening, you must make sure that the envelope is not cluttered. This is what determines whether that person will pick up the envelope or simply throw it away without even opening it. It is quite important that you place a significant amount of time on choosing the color of the envelope. Keeping it neutral would be the best.
Generally direct mail marketing campaigns are carried out on 4×6 or 5×7 sized envelopes. This of course can change depending on the type of direct mail marketing campaign you are carrying out.
Today many companies are focused on cutting down costs. This is why the usage of envelopes has decreased and the usage of postcards has evolved. Unlike an envelope, you need not have to open a postcard and the moment you receive it, you could read out the information without wasting time. Postcards contain short and simple messages and therefore anyone can read it quickly. To make your direct mail marketing campaign more creative, you could add a few designs onto the postcard, without of course cluttering it.
When it comes to creating, printing and posting postcards, it is shown that unlike printing a business letter and mailing it with an envelope, the postcard is much cheaper and very cost effective.
We all love to get things for free. Your direct mail marketing campaign could be a hit if you decide on using the postcards as a discount coupon or a gift voucher. This will let them come to your store to purchase a product and receive a discount for it.
Open House and Ribbon Cutting postcard
When a business moves to a new location they need to promote the move. One of the good ways to do this is by organizing an open house and inviting visitors to come in. Postcard invitations to visit a new business location for an open house celebration is an effective way to:
- Make current customers aware of your new location
- Bring in new potential customers to introduce them to your business.
Here is an example of a financial services business invitation postcard for their open house and ribbon cutting celebration:
